Policy on Prescribing Sedation for Hospital Procedures
Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to provide clear guidance on the prescribing of sedation in relation to procedures undertaken in a hospital setting. It ensures patient safety, adherence to clinical best practice, and appropriate use of NHS resources.
Policy Statement
Eastlands Medical Practice does not prescribe sedation for procedures carried out in hospital settings. Sedation for such procedures is the responsibility of the hospital clinical team who are trained, equipped, and accountable for administering and monitoring sedative medication within a controlled environment.
Rationale
- * Sedative medicines carry significant risks and require specialist monitoring before, during, and after administration.
- * Hospitals have the necessary facilities, equipment, and trained staff to manage any complications or emergencies that may arise from sedation.
- * Prescribing sedation in primary care for hospital use may compromise patient safety and place inappropriate responsibility on the practice.
- * This approach is consistent with local and national guidelines to ensure safe, effective, and responsible prescribing.
Scope
This policy applies to all clinicians and staff at Eastlands Medical Practice and to all patients registered with the practice.
Patient Communication
Patients requesting sedation for hospital procedures will be informed that this must be provided and managed by the hospital team. Where appropriate, patients will be directed to contact their hospital consultant or specialist nurse for advice regarding sedation options.
Review
This policy will be reviewed every two years or sooner if there are changes to national guidance or local commissioning policies.
Approval
This policy has been approved by the GP partners of Eastlands Medical Practice and is effective from the date of issue.
